I Wrote a Sonata for Rach (Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia in cis moll) - CelvinPiano

Hello fellow musicians and music lovers,

I am an 16 years old composer and I’ve recently finished writing a Sonata in C# minor, dedicated to  Rachmaninoff, and I’d love to get some ears on it! If anyone is up for giving it a listen and sharing their thoughts or feedback, I’d really appreciate it. Anything from the composition itself to ideas on performance would be super helpful.

And if someone feels inspired to perform it, that would be amazing! I’m open to chatting about that as well, and we could definitely figure something out if it resonates with you.

Feel free to reach out if you’re interested, or if you know someone who might be. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

Best,
Celvin

Hello @CelvinPiano,

Welcome to the forum!

The beginning is a nice waltz with a lovable melody, while the right hand having any interesting hemiola rhythm. I always love C# minor as it!s my favourite key! B.41’s harmony is nice to have. I also love the harmony of the next section and it does sound like Rach in some harmonies like those 7th chords.

I like you make the opening return in a low register for variety, but I think you can change the waltz rhythm to something more dramatic! Like using arpeggiated triplets would be great. B.145 gets some really beautiful arpeggios and you should use more! I also like you conversation between high and low voice. I think you can introduce one more contrasting episode before getting to the coda. The coda is quite nice while showing off some pianistic touch.

Good job and you are for sure to be talented as you are just 16 years old.Keep going and maybe listen to works here by other members. Thanks for joining us!

Very cool, especially for your age. Are you the performer? It's well executed already... I'd focus more on new compositions! Keep broadening your chops as a writer, professional performances will come, especially if you pursue your efforts with higher education; there are loads of opportunities there. I'm excited to hear how you take Chopin's influence in cool new inventive ways that are uniquely you.

As a musician, many fail to realize how important networking and comradery is amongst your peers. You're already on the right path posting your music for the world to hear, now keep that up by being engaged in communities with likeminded individuals!

Keep it up! This is very promising 🙂

Thank you! Yes, I performed it on the video. Currently, I am working on a new composition but It‘ll take some time. My goal is in fact to compose pieces who are later on performed by professionals such as stage pianists and so on.
