UncleRed99 Posted October 29 Posted October 29 (edited) **Edit 2** More updates to the score... I've got ADHD, so forgive my forgetfulness and early composition submissions, at times. My brain don't operate like it should sometimes, but I'm 100% confident this is the last update 🙂 The Long, Arctic Midnight.pdf MuseScore Profile Post This is the completed score audio and PDF for reading along, or, follow the link above to a Musescore post with playback included. 🙂 Edited November 2 by UncleRed99 Updated rehearsal markings as suggested, in the PDF score MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu The Long, Arctic Midnight (11-8 Time, for Orchestra) > next PDF The Long, Arctic Midnight Quote

chopin Posted November 2 Posted November 2 The beginning is very strong, and love your chord progressions. You have a very nice rhythm along with a beautiful melody, and I feel the buildup works really well. When you change things up around 1:40 I felt like it was a great way to break things up. I wish you had more of these instances where you changed things up though. The recapitulation of your intro at around 4:20 is beautifully done. I literally have 0 criticisms with how you ended this piece, probably because you ended it with a recap of your intro, which I feel is very strong. The intro, 1:40, and the ending are by far my favorite parts. The only minor criticism I have would be to break up the momentum just a little more in the body of the piece. 1 Quote
UncleRed99 Posted November 2 Author Posted November 2 Thank you very much. The positive feedback warms my soul ❤️ I actually meant to update this again because I found an orchestra group to play it so I made some changes... I'm going to do that, now, if you possibly are up to giving it one more run through 😅 My ADHD made me forget that this website existed for a minute, until the email from your reply came in. Quote
chopin Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Don't forget about this community. We have a Discord too, which might suit your style better. Did you make the recording more dynamic? Whatever change you made, I think it made the recording sound a lot better. Your chord changes definitely give this piece a very movie-like feel to it. If you are going to get an orchestra to play this, I'd love for you to post the recording of it here when finished. 1 Quote
Alex Weidmann Posted November 2 Posted November 2 I just have one very trivial comment about your scoring. Like me, you use rehearsal marks to delineate motivic changes. I too used to put my first mark (A) at the beginning of the score. Then I sent my work to an orchestra for the first time, and was told the first mark never goes at the beginning of the piece. That's because the conductor will say "go from the top" if they want to start over. I then had a look at some works by famous composers, and found this was true: they never put the A rehearsal mark at the start of the work. 1 Quote

I'm not a professional, so that's probably correct. My logic was to mark all sections of the piece, under their own "parent" section letter. I'll look at shifting those around more properly. thanks for pointing that out! Quote

I did alter some dynamic markings and did a little tweaking of instrument volumes! so that means i solved the balancing issues that I noticed during the last edit. And If they approve doing this for me, I certainly will!! Quote
MJFOBOE Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Overall - an enjoyable driven pulse ... I could hear this as part of a children's film score highlighting some mystical journey/adventure. Mark 1 Quote
