Here are two random pieces of piano audio. What happened here is I sat down and just started playing; I didn't think about the scale, or rhythym, or mood, or much for the first one, and for the second I had NIN's Ghosts VI: Together in mind.

I was planning on writing some pieces this month. I had some ideas, but something very bad and unexpected happened, and now most of them feel futile, and I might not have the time/energy/motivation for the ones that do not, so I am hoping putting these improvisations here will help that somehow.

For anyone who chooses to listen to this, you have my thanks. It really is random and feels like nothing.

P.S. I might keep updating this.

Hi @piajo,

I know I love the beginning section of "I don't know"! I am less in liking of the contrasting sentence in 1:10 but I like the later section. I like the ending as well.

For "I got it wrong" I don't think you got ot wrong! I love those quartal chords.

Thx for sharing!

I see! Thank you, this will be useful if I later try to fashion this into an actual piece of music. I'll be honest, I had to listen to this again because I could barely remember what I played.

Then I think you must listen to NIN's Together, or preferably the entire Ghosts: V album. It's one of my favourite albums ever, and Together is one of my favourite pieces of music. Nine Inch Nails in general is pretty great. I basically copied parts of that track while playing.

I really like the first piece “I don't know”. It is very meditative and calm. You can feel the improvisational nature. The phrase at 1:10...., is good, those parallel notes are original, the only thing is that at the end, rhythmically it goes a bit out of the general mood of the piece.

The second “I got it wrong” is in the same line. Very nice part from 00:30 that sounds very delicate.

I think you do well to bring these improvisations forward. Maybe they will evolve in the future some pairs into something else, but if not, they are also fine as they are.
Writing music helps me a lot of times.

Best regards.

I'm glad you think so!

I think playing and listening helps me, but writing music is usually for when I am feeling a little clearer, after things have settled down a bit. Until then, these improvisations can hopefully spark some ideas!

Hi @piajo!

Piano improvisations in general, and this includes yours, often give me the impression of belonging in a video game like "Sim City" or "The Sims".  There's a serenity from the liberal use of space which sounds contemplative and would serve as the perfect background to the beginnings of building a city or building a house for your sim to occupy.  "I don't know" soon gets more involved which would fit with an increase in the activity of the player.

"I got it wrong" sounds almost like a continuation of "I don't know".  I wouldn't have noticed that the previous piece ended if I wasn't looking at the mp3 player at the time.  My impression is generally the same for this piece as for the other.  Perhaps this one is a bit more harmonically complex.  When you're improvising, you're forced to work with simple, accessible ideas that are easy to manipulate at hand, so the music is the pinnacle of simplicity.  But there's definitely some modal and chromatic changes and detractions.  Keep improvising and I'm sure you'll get even better at bringing more harmonic and motivic complexity to your improvisations.  Thanks for sharing!
