Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 Bagatelle in G major is a piece I composed in 2011. I was inspired when listening to Beethoven’s Bagatelle in G minor, op. 119 no.1 in my music lesson, and I immediately composed this piece that night in less than two hours. Here is the YouTube video and score of the piece: Bagatelle in G major.pdf The piece is in simple ABABCoda form. The middle section in C minor is probably due to my fervent love with Beethovenian C minor LoL! i revisit this piece because of @PCC ‘s showing of his manuscript in the discord group. I also wanna use this piece to test the new microphone I just buy. It sounds much better than my crappy phone, although with my bad recording skill this recording still has some tears in it. For me the piece is just a banal one, but not bad for a teen. I just wonder how do I transform from this level of writing to the piano piece ( ) in a year LoL! Here’s the Beethoven Bagatelle for your reference: Hope you enjoy this little piece! Markus Boyd Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I much enjoyed your bagatelle, particularly its classical roots and later deviation into something quirky and at times comical 🙂 Very well done indeed, and impressive you did it in under three hours. 1 Quote
PCC Posted January 1 Posted January 1 It's not extremely phenomenal but of course very solid groundwork tbh I posted that ss on the server channel hoping someone might play it or even finish off where I left off lol if anyone is interested go look at our discord lol 1 Quote
PeterthePapercomPoser Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Hi @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu! It's a cute little piece but not without its complexities! Like, for example, the first musical statement is a double period with elision that leads into your second C minor tonal area. Although because of your heavy emphasis on G, I don't really feel like you ever really arrive in C minor and you quickly return to the G major theme. When you return to the main theme the phrase structure stays the same, but you vary up the modality of the 2nd theme, opting to stay in G major instead of C minor or G minor. The final statement of the A theme you marked scherzando which is appropriate because it's the third time that the listener is exposed to the material and hence starts to expect the piece to conclude soon. So going faster gives a sense of excitement, exhilaration and rushing towards the end which makes the end sound that much more conclusive when it comes. Great job and thanks for sharing! It's not surprising that this piece is doing well in terms of views on YouTube, since it is quite accessible and fun! 1 Quote
Thatguy v2.0 Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Wonderful! I've love the jovial atmosphere, and your performances keep getting better and better 🙂 You're a phenomenal player, your articulations are spot on and really bring out the character. The microphone sounds much better than your phone, but maybe have it back from the piano just a bit. You can always raise the volume but can't do anything about clipping from it being too close. 1 Quote

Yeah I’m seldom quirky and comical in my music haha, but maybe these teenage works show more positive side of me! I remember I sacrificed those two hours of revision to compose this piece then! Lazy guy isn’t it! Thx for listening and commenting. I really appreciate that! Henry Quote

Yeah I just notice that I hate boring repetitions even during my start of composition “career”! I always wanna add changes to avoid anything identical unless I want them to b identical lol. Fortunately it’s an easy piece and I just practice the piece under an hour or so to record it! The 2nd movement of my C# minor is so much harder and I wanna have it recorded asap! 15 hours ago, Thatguy v2.0 said: The microphone sounds much better than your phone, but maybe have it back from the piano just a bit. It’s much better than my crappy phone and I’m sure our boss @chopin would have fallen tears for no tears haha. Thx for your words Vince! Henry Quote
Mooravioli Posted Thursday at 11:27 PM Posted Thursday at 11:27 PM Hello Henry, you asked for a crazy post: 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️ 🧙♂️🧙♂️ sorry for the late reply 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 😑 The sound quality is definitely improving, kudos to you on buying a new microphone; since the tone is now much sharper and intense, I would exaggerate the dynamic changes a little more if you're going for this sort of microphone placement. But as others have suggested, putting your microphone farther away could produce better results. As for your short piece, I quite like it, reminds me of those pieces from the Trinity or Yamaha Piano curriculum, not that it is a bad thing. On that note, maybe you could have your students play a few of your pieces. I'm sure there is a lot to learn in regards to technique and form. Here's what I found about playing your own pieces in an exam: https://teacherhub.abrsm.org/mod/page/view.php?id=1473 anyways, 💪 💪 💪 💪 💪 look forward to your new compositions 1 Quote

I tell only one or two students I like on my ability to compose, and never show them my compositions at all because I feel embrassed to do so haha. 3 hours ago, Mooravioli said: look forward to your new compositions Thx! My next post would either be a crappy Bagatelle or the 2nd movement of my C# minor Piano Sonata. Stay tuned! Henry Quote
