Hey,

Was wondering if it would be possible, or whether people would want sound enabled on the shoutbox. Sometimes i put something there but I don't have the forum open exactly. If there could be some kind of note played for everytime there was a new message, I could check the browser at my leisure.

Also was wondering if there was anyway in which the shoutbox could stay open regardless of what page of the forum you were looking up? That way I wouldn't have to have two browsers open if I wanted to talk on the shoutbox. Thanks

To answer question one, that would take Javascript knowledge and the ability to find a suitable place for the code in the Administration Panel. It's a good idea, a button that has an ear on it that when clicked it puts an X on the ear and stops the notes from being played, but when you see the ear it plays a very short melodic phrase (one phrase/more than one playing at random) for each shout. It shouldn't be too difficult, but it might take a few hours just to code and then some time to make sure it's working correctly. It's possible, but I'm not sure any member here has sufficient experience with Javascript to do it. Also, if the shoutbox is downloaded from a free script on a site somewhere, there remains doubt of whether you are allowed to edit the script. Nobody will find out, but there is a chance that you can't. Also, if there is just a link to a site hosting the shoutbox, you probably won't be able to attach Javascript. There's a chance however, that if the Administration is paying for the shoutbox, you can, although I don't think they're already paying, because for a shoutbox it doesn't make much sense at all.

To answer your other question--simply no, because the only way to possibly do this is to add a rules section to each forum, allow the board to show the rules for each forum and plug in the code for the shoutbox in each rules page for every single forum. For a shoutbox, that's just way too much space to waste for not having to leave one more IE/etc. running. It's always better to conserve space for a more productive and efficient "something" that might come along the way then for this little benefit--the shoutbox in every forum that has a single benefit, but more downsides.

I can think of a couple of ways in which this could be achieved, but neither of them are particularly efficient or desirable, and I'm not even sure if one would work at all. Unless running within the confines of Java or Flash, this isn't really something that can be done on the web, especially since the shoutbox uses reasonably complex technology to begin with.

The new shoutbox doesn't have a float option, unfortunately. I may look into adding one somehow.

In the meantime, my advice for you shoutbox watchers is to download Firefox and maintain one tab for browsing and one for the index page, to keep up-to-date with new shouts. :D

By the way, CreationArtist, you might want to check the facts before you post. You stated numerous mistruths in your reply above, and these might go some way towards misinforming people.

I've been in the message board environment and began my own business actually in the area and have had a lot of experience with a Java Runtime Environment and also the message board setup of Invision Power Board and Invisionfree, not particularly with this board, but with very similar ones.

I based everything I said on facts, I don't just blurt out what comes to mind, but I told you what it takes (within an approximation of course) and followed up with my personal opinion. I see nothing wrong with what I said, but I do apologize if I made a mistake as I admit I'm human. Plus it's not that big of a deal.

Also you had a good idea with Firefox, keeping a tab up, although I see not much difference between that and another browser. It conserves memory, but not much. You can also load the URL for the chatbox, and save it to a shortcut on the desktop for easier access, which is also another good idea.

Question--does this chatbox have a button for an elongated history to check what was said a little while ago?

...! Oh :o , sorry. It would get annoying and is also pretty pointless I guess. You could always have the option of turning it off, but is it really necessary?
