Charlie Gregson Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Here is a thread where anyone can ask "What is your opinion of _______?" Discussion ensues. I'll start. What is your opinion of Steve Reich? Quote
robinjessome Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 What is your opinion of Steve Reich? Fascinating, profound theoritian. Music sounds like it was written by a profound theoritian - for me, boring and unlistenable after five minutes. Very interesting - on paper. He does manage to get some brilliant phasing effects though... Quote
M_is_D Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 What is your opinion of Giacomo Puccini? Quote
PianoManGidley Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 What's your opinion of Milton Babbitt? For me, I can't stand his music--it's far too stoic, which IMO defeats one of (if not THE) main point of music. Quote
PianoManGidley Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 IDK, but Mr. Babbit Looks really, really old... What does "IDK" mean? Quote
Guest Nickthoven Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 What do you think of Michael Torke? Quote
Alex Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I love howard Shore. The lord of the rings symphony was a masterpeice. Quote

Guest JohnGalt Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Ravel: "Brilliant Orchestrator; Damn You, Bolero!" Quote
M_is_D Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I think Elliot Carter needs to die. Fuckin like 98 now. Not only that, he continues to compose on a regular basis! Quote
Alex Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I hate Ravel's bolero. It bugs me. Heard it WAY too many times. So, how 'bout John Williams? Quote
M_is_D Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 what do you think of Vincenzo Bellini? Quote
robinjessome Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 So, how 'bout John Williams? He's good as what he does....and is particularily good a reworking Mahler to fit over Harry Potter... Not terribly creative though... Quote
Guest JohnGalt Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 He's good as what he does....and is particularily good a reworking Mahler to fit over Harry Potter...Not terribly creative though... Or Prokofiev to fit Star Wars, etc etc. I like his music though. Quote
Nightingale Incorporated Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Bellini has written some of my favorite operatic music. However, his operas are stereotypical and not often performed (around here, anyway). Not nearly as popular as Puccini, but much better liked for his baritone rolls. "Suoni la tromba intrepido!" So, what do you think of Ralph Vaughan Williams? Quote
Keerakh Kal Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Flos Ca-Who? Anyone heard of Eric Whitacre? ~Kal Quote
PianoManGidley Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Anyone heard of Eric Whitacre? I don't know of anyone in band or choir who HASN'T heard of Whitacre. He's got a good sound and good style...my only complaint is that sometimes it feels like he's writing music that he knows will sell and be popular. Of course, that's just my totally subjective feeling. Quote
robinjessome Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 I don't know who ANY of these people are.... *shrug* Quote
violinfiddler Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 What does everybody think of William Bolcom? Quote
