Alex Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Ok, off the top of your head, what's the best concerto ever written? I like Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto in C minor. And Brahms Violin Concerto No. 1 is a close second. Quote
Mark Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 i like all of vivaldi cello concerti (despite the fact that they're all the same) Quote
Alex Posted December 31, 2006 Author Posted December 31, 2006 I know. ^^ It was a joke. Someone said that Vivaldi didnt write 500 concerti. But that he wrote the same concerto 500 times. Quote
Guest JohnGalt Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto or Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. Quote
Mark Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 no-one complains at eric clapton for writing the same guitar solo millions of times Quote
T.J. Menzel Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 I would have to say any by Khachaturian but specifically the Violin Concerto later turned into a flute concerto by Rampal. Quote
Mark Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 and the brandenburg concerto number 3 is another favourite of mine Quote
Alex Posted December 31, 2006 Author Posted December 31, 2006 Marius showed me a performance of that on youtube last night. It's also one of my favs. Quote
Alex Posted December 31, 2006 Author Posted December 31, 2006 Um. Not anymore. Just do a search for "brandenburg concerto no. 3" Quote
C J. Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Mostly, Mozart's wind concertos... Clarinet, Oboe, Flute, and Bassoon. Quote

Although to narrow it down a bit, how about: Mozart: Piano Concerti No.13©, 20(Dm), 21©, 22(Eb), 24(Cm), 25© Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb 'Emperor' Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Quote
William K. Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Sinfonia Concertante: Mozart OMG how could I have possibly forgotten that one??!!! Ok, that one is one of my favourites as well. ;) Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I always find it strange to come across "best of" threads on forums. it's all so arbitrary. my "favourite" concerti are Prokoviev's 2nd piano concerto, Barber's piano and cello concerti, Bernstein's 2nd symphony (a concerto desguised as a symphony), Szymanowski's two violin concerti, Alan Belkin's violin concerto, and Rachmaninov's 4th piano concerto. but there are so many more, it's hard to say with any certainty... so why bother? These are just among some of my favourites. They all have their qualities. Quote
aerlinndan Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 ^ I'm with QC on the Barber piano concerto. Great piece. I also like the Ravel piano concerto as well as the Chopin E minor concerto. I'm mostly a piano man so that's where the bulk of my knowledge lies...but I also like the Dvorak cello concerto, too. Quote
Guest CreationArtist Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 (Especially the Rondeau-Presto Finale) Quote
CaltechViolist Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I always find that the "best of" threads turn into listings of the most frequently-heard music. Some of my favorites are also quite frequently performed (Beethoven Violin Concerto, Brahms Violin Concerto, Sibelius Violin Concerto, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, Dvorak Cello Concerto), but there are other great pieces that are somewhat less often heard: Bach, Double Concerto for Violin, Oboe, and Orchestra Brahms, Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra Bruch, Double Concerto for Viola, Clarinet, and Orchestra Bruch, Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra Gliere, Horn Concerto Mackenzie, Pibroch Suite for Violin and Orchestra Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante for Winds and Orchestra Rheinberger, Piano Concerto Shostakovich, Piano Concerto No. 2 C. Stamitz, Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra R. Strauss, Horn Concerti No. 1 and No. 2 Walton, Viola Concerto Quote
violinfiddler Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Here are some of my favorites: Beethoven violin concerto Mendelssohn E minor violin concerto Brahms violin concerto Greig A minor piano concerto Tchaikovsky piano concerto no. 1 Quote
pathetique Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 My favorite concertos are Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. I also like Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens even though it's not technically a concerto. Quote
