Guest Nickthoven Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 THE PROMPT: Each composer will create one movement of a symphony, using a full symphonic orchestra. This one movement will contain at least one main linking theme, and other motives and thematic elements. The movement must be one out of a number of movements, as most symphonies go. Plans must be presented for other movements, 3 minimum. Skill must be shown in areas of: development of themes, cohesiveness, creativity, instrumentation, overall effect, and score preparation. The music will be submitted in any form, with a stress on the score, not on a sound file. The judges will judge mainly on the score, looking for attention to clarity, detail, and overall preparation. This competition is for the preparation of composers going public with their music. THE ENSEMBLE: The piece must include at least one part of each instrument: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet (or Cornet), Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, optional percussion, optional piano/harp/celeste, and a full string section. Anything in addition is acceptable. THE DEADLINE: 23:59 EST FRIDAY MARCH 30th A NOTE: Composers must submit NEW MUSIC ONLY. Music that has been started earlier than the competition opening cannot be submitted, with the exception of pieces that still need at least 90% work or so. COMPOSERS: 1. 2. Pianobeast10489 3. Marius Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'd like to be a judge, if that's alright :innocent:
PianoBeast10489 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Nickthoven - I'd like to enter myself into this competition, please.
William K. Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Wait a minute. When you said: Symphony, I thought you meant write A symphony, not write for a full symphony orchestra. What about the classical composers here? You might want to re-think that part of it, because if I were to compete in this, I would want to use my own instrumentation. And besides, it says: "Skill must be shown in areas of: development of themes, cohesiveness, creativity, instrumentation, overall effect, and score preparation. The music will be submitted in any form, with a stress on the score, not on a sound file. " How can this be an a part of the scoring when we have our orchestra set up for us? I just think that maybe we should be allowed to have our own instrumentation for our own styles. :innocent:
Guest Nickthoven Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 The idea of setting a minimum is to keep people from writing pieces that are really chamber pieces. If you can't possibly work with a larger orchestra than you are used to, I guess a couple of alterations are fine, but make sure to run it by me.
Daniel Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Did you want added there Mitchell? I doubt you could write it for concert band - you'd have to ask Nick though.
Nightingale Incorporated Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'm in, and the instrumentation is no problem for me, as I typically write for those instruments anyway. I might add chorus, if I may... and piano and harp are optional, right?
Mike Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Yes, chorus should be fine. Yes, piano and harp are optional, as denoted by optional piano/harp  I may enter, but on the condition that I am in possession of Finale within the next few weeks...which is unlikely to happen.
Rafn Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I would like to enter, but I'm still waiting on my notation software being delivered. If I feel I have enough time once it gets here, would I be allowed to enter? And are there only 8 slots? I know I'm new, but this would be exciting and I hope you consider adding me. The motivation is there. I'm excited, though, to see the results of the other contestants.
Daniel Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Well you should enter before the closing date (I'm not sure what that is yet) There are not only 8 slots - we always just keep the next slot open so people don't think the competition is full.

Okay - thanks for replying. I'd like to enter if it's okay with everybody.
Guest Nickthoven Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 me.can i write it for concert band? No, sorry. This is orchestral only. We'll make sure to plan for a concert band/wind ensemble competition in the future, though!
Mitchell Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 okay. well i'll enter anyway and write for orchestra. :)
Mitchell Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 i can write for strings. i have a total of two piceces written with them. maybe more.
Maximilian Caldwell Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'll judge, though a MIDI requirement would be VERY nice (My internet is crap; downloading ten or fifteen ten minute mp3s would take 18-20 hours).
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'd also like to be signed up at a judge.
