7 at most, or something around that number (my guess)....I've begun, but because of other composition necessities I've had to put it off :musicwhistle:. If it's in the middle of march, I might not be able to finish in time (well, finish to the level of "fully" completed) but I'll definitely devote as much time as I can to it.

you could've written the entire thing, and sounded exactly like Mozart, you post-romantic stuff at least sounds like you ;)

There's nothing wrong with sounding like Mozart, as long as it's very good.

there's nothing wrong with sounding classical, just sounding like mozart isn't something anyone wants to do, just like sounding exactly like Bach, or Haydn, why do what has already been done?

God's a boring symphonist. I bet he would lose this competition if he entered. :musicwhistle:

God probably writes using the twelve tone method, as well....I mean, there's that whole conservation of energy/momentum going on, so it would make sense that he try to "conserve" the notes used :P (hopefully some people will understand that :musicwhistle:).

ALRIGHTY!!!

Let's have some updates so we can finally put a deadline on this thing!

Mine: I am working hard on this, and I have roughly 2-3 minutes of music so far. It's very intense, brash, violent, and rhythmic, a la Rite of Spring. Actually, there's a section where my original idea was to have pulsing, dissonant strings, with woodwind hits and falls and brass melody. But I changed the rhythm of the strings so it didn't sound too Rite of Springy, although it's still very heavily influenced by Stravinsky.

I'm excited for this competition! But let's get some knowledge of where everyone's at so we can set a deadline!

Unfortunately, I didn't even begin, but don't let that hold you up, because it seems like I may even drop out considering GPO's considerable RAM requirement always causing Finale to boot out in the middle of work (which by the way, can be extremely annoying and can even throw of the thought process or any ideas I may have had). I may start writing on paper, but this is much more difficult, not to mention it would greatly help to hear a confirmation in sound once in a while, so I'm really not sure if I would like to begin composing my first symphony under these conditions. I'm probably going to wait until I get a laptop, which won't be for some time. Since I'm not really sure of what I'm going to do, I'll wait to drop out of the competition another week or to and see how things go. I'll start by composing in my head for now.

I have about 00:40 of music, it sounds kind of like a bizarre version of the allegretto to Beethoven's 7th. :P

Early april is fine.

Matt:

Don't have GPO while you're composing, yes, it sounds good, but it uses far too much RAM to be practicle, get a good amount done, then disconnect to the internet, as that uses valuable resourses, SAVE YOUR FILE, turn GPO on, check how it sounds, amend any dynamics and so on that the finale synth was hiding, then turn it off before doing anything else that's a bit strenuous for the computer and may make it crash.

Don't bang out just yet, I'm looking forward to hearing yours

I'm submitting the third movement to my symphony, so I've been working hard on that. I've got about 4 minutes down right now, and I'm a little less than halfway done with it. My plan is to finish considerably ahead of the deadline, so that I can get to revising/editing everything to really polish it up. Middle of March sounds good to me, though. :)

Middle of March is what I was thinking. My school has a competition for a student's piece to be played by the symphony orchestra in the following school year, deadline for scores being in early April. So if I finish this on time, I'll have a chance of a real performance. If not, I'll definitely have a recording sometime next year, in one of the three orchestra readings we have.

I'm still excited to hear all this music! I'll set the deadline soon.
