Dirk Gently Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I found these two pages of the second movement of my wind quartet piece in the back of a notebook..... They showcase my sketching process pretty well, I think, though now I've taken to using more symbols and words rather than actual notes. Anyway, I thought perhaps I'd post these up here. They deviate a bit from the finale piece (Variations) but for a while they match up quite well...obviously, when I actually hear the notes played I might want to change stuff. The little tick marks indicate time....and the notes indicate notes :ermm:. They don't have specific tones assigned to them on paper, but I kind of did that in my head while writing them.. Here are the scans: page 1: page 2: and here's the thread where you can find the piece (check the lower posts on page one). I hope I could help show some ways to formulate ideas for pieces . My composition teacher told me about this method and I love it... Quote
Guest JohnGalt Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Gah, I can't stand when my handwritten music is anything but perfect. I kind of see what you mean about the time ticks, and I do something similar at times when things get complicated. Quote
Dirk Gently Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 As an artist, I'm entitled to messily scratching notes on some notebook paper for my music ;)....;) Quote

Hey thanks for posting this; I am new to composing and facing the blank page is pretty hard for me. This might give me an idea of where to start when composing a piece. Quote
Charlie Gregson Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely use them. I also find that a TI-83 plus calculator is good for sketching out 16th note rhythms, since each row of text is 16 characters. Quote
