J Dunlap Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 I am writing a concerto for violin, flute, and trumpet together, and I am wondering, should I leave out the regular orchestra flutes and trumpets, or is it typical to leave them in anyway? I suppose it is a matter of taste, but I am curious about how it is usually done.
CaltechViolist Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Usually the ones in the orchestra are kept in. That said, there's nothing wrong with reducing the woodwind and brass sections in a wind concerto.
Guest cavatina Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Do whatever makes the music sound good to you.
J Dunlap Posted October 18, 2005 Author Posted October 18, 2005 *Laughs* More to the point I have three weeks to write it in and don't want to deal with those extra flutes and trumpets. ;)
J. Lee Graham Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 I believe Caltech is right - nowadays, the ripieno players are left in the orchestra. Mozart and his contemporaries usually left them out, though; e.g. when they were writing a flute concerto, there were usually no flutes in the orchestra. Concerti for strings were an exception, of course. What an unusual sound that combination of solo instruments will make. I hope you'll post it when it's done. Oh, and GET TO WORK! ;)
