Sawdust Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hey I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a few good textbooks about basic music theory (I think I need to go back to class on that one), classic opera, jazz, big band blues and symphony. I plan to go to the bookstore tommorow so any reccomendations would help. Quote
Glassworks Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 I think the bible of music theory is "Tonal Harmony in Concept and Practice" by Allen Forte... Anyone disagree? Quote
robinjessome Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Hey I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a few good textbooks about basic music theory ...jazz... Mark Levine's The Jazz Theory Book. Mark Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 I've been thinking of getting that Robin, definitely worth it? I'm also planning on getting Jody Fisher's series for learning jazz guitar, I've seen a few lessons online with him and he guy is amazing. Quote

The Levine book is invaluable for learning and understanding the workings of jazz theory. ...You should, nay must purchase that book. I don't have it anymore....I used it so much it fell apart. Quote

SSC Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 A 10 year old thread! Oh wow! My favourite theory book is Harmonielehre from Diether de la Motte. I like the historical approach. Quote
