lester Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I always have lots of ideas, but very short ones. And when I try to finish them or make them longer I'm very rarely satisfied, and at some moment I just completely block. Let us say the average time of my pieces is one minute, and than I can't get further, without ruining it. And I really don't know how to solve this problem. Does anyone has advice, or tips that could help me. The most problems come when my first theme is finished. I have posted some works on this site... You could maybe take a look at them for more specific help or something. Please help! Quote
robinjessome Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I know what you're going through. I got stuck for over a year, and didn't write a single thing. It'll work itself out - make sure you stay positive, don't freak out. The best thing (I feel) you can do is LISTEN...a lot. Buy many, many records. Listen to them. You're unsure how to proceed with pieces; listen to the greats - how'd they do it? Emulate and imitate. Also, keep writing - eventually something decent will push through. I had a particular piece that had stumped me. I was lost - kept trying to bash through it, to no avail. Eventually I had to abandon it...and then I pulled out of the haze. Point is, keep going. Something not working? Leave it, move on...don't stop. ... Quote
lester Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 Thanks... I'm certainly not short of ideas, if I take a guess, I have 200-300 different ideas (they're not all of the same quality of course)... But it's very hard to give shape to the ideas and make it part from a bigger whole. Once I have something and I feel it's time for another theme or something, that's the time I get stuck. Everything I try then doesn't fit. I'll definitly keep writing, and I'll try to listen more and more aimed. (Maybe you could take a look at my violinsonata, introduction-Theme1-Bridge(quite large)-theme2, that belongs together, but after theme 2 I have put 2 other themes, and that's a bit odd) Quote
robinjessome Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 So it's less of a writer's block than it is a block of developing your basic ideas... hummm...something like this will come with experience. And, knowing intimately all the tools at your disposal (harmony, melody, rhythm, etc.) I'd say again however - LISTEN! And yeah, keep trying - eventually you'll find one that works. Do you keep a folder/journal/log of your ideas? You never know when something you rejected two months ago would be the perfect thing to develop a current idea... ... Quote
