luderart Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 What constitutes musical truth? Is it closer to personal truth or social truth? Is music rather an expression of personal or of social truth? Quote
Sawdust Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I think it's basically open to interpretation, and since it's general the result of an ensemble (small band) or one person effort it's mostly an expression of personal truths (Since an ensemble or band has to make a collect decision the whole surely couldn't stray far from the parts). But personal truth never ever strays that far from social truth (Personal truth is after all a consequence of social truth). Even a complete sociopath usually creates something that represents a perspective of social truth... Not really sure if that's what you meant though. Quote
montpellier Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 There's no answer to that until someone tells us what truth is.... Can it be any more truthful than any other form of communication? Quote
Sawdust Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 hmmm.....Can music lie? Numbers don't screw with people, people screw with people ... Same for music I guess. Quote
spc1st Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I don't see how one could categorize music as having truth or not having truth. Could you elaborate on what exactly what you mean by such a question? Quote
luderart Posted March 26, 2007 Author Posted March 26, 2007 I don't see how one could categorize music as having truth or not having truth. Could you elaborate on what exactly what you mean by such a question? Well, maybe I can rephrase the question. Folk music can be said to express social feelings or social truth. What about music composed by a known composer? Does it still express social feelings? Or is it rather an expression of unique personal feelings or truths? By the way I am looking for opinions and not strict yes or no answers. Luder Quote
Sawdust Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 What about music composed by a known composer? Does it still express social feelings? Or is it rather an expression of unique personal feelings or truths? It's both, even for folk music.. Pop Music, Rock Music, Metal, Drunken singing. Personal feelings are directly influenced by social feelings, even deeply personal ones. Also social feelings are under the scrutiny of the person who wrote the music. All in all pretty subjective.. that's the beauty of music EDIT: In the end, given that it's subjective, I think any form of music like any form of art is more personal than anything else. Quote
