chopin Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Chat Schedule: 8PM EST/BST Time Why the chatroom? File SharingShare your files to an individual person, or the entire chatroom. [*]Private messaging [*]Notified when messages have been received through sound Makes sure you do not miss messages while browsing the forum! [*]Can see who is using the chat [*]Laxer environment [*]Only those in the chat can see conversations [*]Bigger chat box Why the shoutbox? Quick and easy way to notify members of an achievement Quick questions Light chatter Anyway, there are differences, and the chatroom does offer more functionality than the shoutbox. The main advantage is file sharing, message notifications and customization. Quote
Saiming Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Just a question. With all these options in the chatroom, will it take a lot of bandwidth? Quote
chopin Posted March 30, 2007 Author Posted March 30, 2007 Just a question. With all these options in the chatroom, will it take a lot of bandwidth? YC can use up to 200 gigabytes of bandwidth per month. As of now, we use about 30 gigs / month. If I notice that we need more bandwidth, I will upgrade the server. I most likely will need to upgrade the server anyway to a dedicated when we finally launch the social networking and music management system. I have to be careful with full MP3 sharing on this site, because MP3's take up alot of space, and use bandwidth. However, there is negligible activity in the chatroom for now, to even worry about bandwidth issues. Issues will only arise when the social networking/music management is launched. Quote
Guest Anders Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 It doesen't work.. Because Chopin hasn't set the permissions correctly yet :whistling: Quote
chopin Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 Should be fixed. Please let me know if the errors persist. Quote
spc1st Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Chat Schedule: 8PM EST/BST Time So... there's a regularly scheduled time for chat(room chat)ting? Quote
Mike Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 There is indeed, as denoted in your quote. Now, if only people would be more religious about observing it. :) Quote
Mark Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Could anyone indulge my laziness and tell me what it is GMT? Quote
Richards Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Ah, thought you wanted to know the acronym. It's the name for the time in all the countries falling in region 0 on this map (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Timezones_optimized.png). The time in the countries on the left of that region is equal to the GMT minus it's region number, the time in the countries on the right that of the GMT plus it's region number. Quote
Mark Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I know what it is, I was asking for the time of the chat in GMT Quote
Mike Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 GMT is one hour behind BST, so it would be 7 PM GMT. I imagine we'll change the time to conform to GMT once Summer Time ends (if the chat schedule idea is still alive and kicking by then, that is). Quote
James QZ Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Hi, I'm just wondering, is it really necessary to have the Chat room? I mean, I rarely see people going on, and there was only one time that I saw someone was on. Quote
Mike Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 The idea is that the chatroom is more private with more features than the shoutbox. It isn't often used, though, you're right. Quote
Mark Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 If the chatroom were to open when YC opened people would stay and chat for a bit, but that could get annoying. Would it be possible to get the chatroom embedded in the index page? Quote
Mike Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 "Open when YC opened"? I was under the impression we did business 24 hours a day here. :P (EDIT: I now see what you mean, silly I. See below for critique, however.) It would be possible to have it embedded in the index page, yes, but that would be rather intrusive. What's more, it would put paid to any relevancy the list of chatters had, since it would be impossible to look at the index without joining the chat. Quote

Mike Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 You know what I meant :P Actually, I didn't, at least at first. 'Twas a moment of mental sluggishness. :P Quote

Mike Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Haha. I should've claimed it as deliberate. :P Quote
Saiming Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Why doesn't anyone use the Chatroom? I mean, a few used it when it was launched but now nobody uses it... Need some heavy Chatroom commercial on YC TV  Quote
Mark Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Will the chatroom still be in existance when the networking thingmebob comes on line? Quote
