Mark Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Exactly, I'm wondering whether the proposed IM will make it redundant, although the shoutbox seems to do a pretty good job of that itself. Quote
Maximilian Caldwell Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I may be missing something, but why only open the Chat at certain times of the day? Quote
Mark Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 You seem to have misunderstood a misunderstanding between Mike and myself, read the previous page for details. Quote
Mike Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 The chatroom will likely remain the same after we introduce the "networking thingmebob". Anyone happen to have any ideas as to how use of it could be encouraged? (Either now or later on. And by "it", I do of course mean the chatroom) Quote

(Either now or later on. And by "it", I do of course mean the chatroom) Perhaps moving it up? The space for it is all the way at the bottom, It would get more traffic perhaps and more people will see it if it's moved up. What about right under the shotbox? And make it big and bold so that no one can miss it. Oh, Mark, it's thingamajig. Quote
Mike Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 If it was moved to the top of the page, it would get in the way. The shoutbox, being located at the top of the index, page, almost completely obscures the first actual forum (this very one, as it happens) on some resolutions, so adding anything more in that location would not be a good idea, in my view. But to get to the chat room, if you don't use the tab for it, it's all of the way down at the bottom. So you can't see who else is in there if anyone, unless you scroll all of the wat down. Quote
Mike Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 On second thoughts, I may create an unobstrusive "users in chat" list of my own, when I get the chance. It could be displayed just below the shoutbox, on a single line (truncated if necessary), and only if the chat isn't empty. *adds to To-Do list* Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I get this message every time I try to access the chat room bob stole my cookie, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons: 1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system? 2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation. Quote
Mike Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 It's that new-fangled Editors group of yours. Try again. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Damn all these changes! What can't we youngins leave things well enough alone? :) Works now, thanks. Quote

Maximilian Caldwell Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 You could do a few things: 1) Allow mp3 transfers through the chatroom 2) Disable shoutbox indefinitely until the chatroom gets more traffic 3) Create a POP-UP CHATROOM!!!!!OMFGKTHNKSBAIROFLTTYLCTNBRBLOLBBQ :D Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Disable shoutbox indefinitely until the chatroom gets more traffic I think that may be a little drastic but maybe something that links the conversations going on in the shoutbox to the main chat room? I can't express what I think the purpose of that would be but I do have a reason :D Quote
Maximilian Caldwell Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I suppose you could limit the number of times a person posts in the shoutbox. Maybe once people get sick of five posts/day, they will start using the chat more? Quote
Saiming Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Is that for the better Sapphire, I think not therefore I have to shoot you. *shoots Sapphire* Quote

bob stole my cookie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Now children, try to stay on topic  Mike'll probably have enough to sort through when he gets back, even without us making all these trivial posts and threads. Quote
Maximilian Caldwell Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I was just trying to think of every possible option, so Mike will have the widest selection of ideas... Quote
violinfiddler Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I suppose you could limit the number of times a person posts in the shoutbox. Maybe once people get sick of five posts/day, they will start using the chat more? That wouldn't make any sense...well, how would that help? Quote
Maximilian Caldwell Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 If people would like to chat, and the amount of time they can use the shoutbox is limited, they would naturally search for an alternative. Weak reasoning, I admit, but it's plausible to a certain degree. Quote
oboeducky Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 What we need is a group of people that will idle in the chat for hours on end and make conversation when they see a message. I would be willing to do this since I use my pc off and on from about 10AM-3PM on this site's time. Anyone else volunteer? Quote
Alan Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 If you want the chatroom to be used over the shoutbox, you can do one (or both) of two things- 1) Get rid of the shoutbox 2) Advertise it! It loks so lonely at the bottom of the screen, and the shoutbox is readily available AT THE TOP. So, people want to use the shoutbox more! That is all the wisdom I shall share for now. Now, back to my hiding hole! :ninja: Quote
James H. Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: you should write that. [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: talk about debussy's style. [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: you're good at putting things in "anybody can understand it" terms. [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: I make #$%^&* too sophisticated sounding. [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: OMG... chat box screens #$%^&* ng swear words [EnigmusJ4] 11:25 pm: butterfly!!! [EnigmusJ4] 11:26 pm: scallop! [EnigmusJ4] 11:26 pm: BASTARD! [EnigmusJ4] 11:26 pm: #$%^&* !! [EnigmusJ4] 11:26 pm: oh, guess not all of them. [EnigmusJ4] 11:26 pm: tehehe. I think that about says it all. So the Chatbox screens SOME bad words... but yet not the worst ones? Wow. :pinch: Disclaimer: The above swearing was included for demonstrative purposes only, I don't swear like that just to swear, I was just testing out the screening filter. No hurt feelings intended to the readers of this post, this thread, or this forum. Cheerio! Quote
