bob_the_sane Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I hope this is the right forum to post this in... Basicly, I'm looking to advance my flute playing from intermediate to advanced level. Does anyone know of any collections of etudes, or flute methods(maybe from a famous composer?) that will help me do this? To give you an idea of my playing level, I am currently playing Mozart's Andante in C for Flute and Orchestra and Dance of the Blessed Spirits by Gluck. They are a little too easy for me though... Any suggestions of good works for flute would be appreciated aswell.;) Did Beethoven write anything for flute? Thanks.:P Quote
zentari Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Well, it really depends how far you want to go, and what you like... Currently, I'm in the French Composers book edited by Moyse (which I hate a lot), after having done the Quantz Concerto in G (I did Dance of the Blessed Spirits about 4 years ago for solo/ensemble). Probably the most important book of my flute career has been Trevor Wye's complete set of books, which contain tone, technique, intonation, scales, tounging.... everything. For development of good flute playing, one must have a great tone and flexibility with that tone. Not only that, basic things like scales and arpeggios are very important. Beethoven wrote a serenade for flute... he also wrote a serenade for three flutes, I believe. If you were looking for someone like Beethoven, I would look at Kuhlau. I'd probably move up to the Telemann or Handel sonatas first. Quote
bob_the_sane Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 Well, it really depends how far you want to go, and what you like... I want to go as far as I possibly can. And as to what I like, I like anything, I just love exploring new pieces/genres/styles/composers. (I did Dance of the Blessed Spirits about 4 years ago for solo/ensemble). Just goes to show how far I still have to go:P I'll have a look for those Trevor Wye books, thanks for the recomendations:) And thanks for the pieces I'll have a look at all of them but yeah, maybe I'm better starting off with Handel.;) Thanks:) Quote
zentari Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Oh, Handel is amazing! I know his pieces aren't like super-advanced-James-Galway-only pieces, but he had a penchant for melody that few other composers could/can equal, and there's a lot of room for spontaneous improvisation in his works. I still play them (almost religiously... and instead of practicing my french stuff) since they're such a good source for musical inventiveness and the like... If I could only have 3 flute books, they would be the two Handel books, and Trevor Wye (though I'd be torn having to get rid of my Quantz "On Playing the Flute") Quote
James QZ Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Hi bob, as a flute major, I can tell you alot of reperitoires, I'm not sure what type of styles are you into or what does your teacher recommend? For example, if you are looking for something challeging, I suggest you Prokofiev sonata in D major, Ibert Concert for flute and orchestra, the Jolivet Chant de Linos, Image by Bozza..ect.. Overall, if you really want something thats stinkin hard, go for Modern pieces. Etudes: Might wanna go for *advanced* -Paganini, the 24 caprices -12 Bozza grand etudes *not really sure about the spelling* -Anderson, there are alot -Karg-Elert, 30 studies Others: -like zentari said, Trevor Wye is a great one -The Grand Method studies and etude, by Taffanel and Gaubert -Marcel Moyse, petite studies -Paula Robison, the orange Juice warm up *lol* Well, try typing all those names in google or yahoo, and see what you like and dont like. This is as far as I can go at the moment, if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me *Pager or email*. I hope this these suggestions would help you in some sort of way :) Best Regards -James Quote
bob_the_sane Posted May 13, 2007 Author Posted May 13, 2007 Ok, I've decided to buy the Trevor Wye books, seeing as both of you recomend them. I'll start from the beginning and work my way through, seeing as I can't afford to buy all of them at once. And the first one is on tone, which I really need. My tone is all breathy and overblown from trying to make myself heard in concert band and swing band (:)). I also like the look of this one: Wye: Music For Solo Flute at Musicroom.com - Sheet Music & Songbooks Do you think that is a good choice? Are those pieces around my level? Thanks guys.:D EDIT: Actually I just found this, I can afford it: eBay.co.uk: PRACTICE BOOKS for the FLUTE + CD. Books 1-5 Trevor Wye (item 260116963843 end time 20-May-07 22:47:54 BST) Is that the right series? Quote
