Guest bryanholmes Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 I want to post some of my electroacoustic works, but I don't know where exactly. I think if the forum has options for posting orchestral works, chamber, solo keyboard, etc., considering the works' instrumentation, it may have also an "electroacoustic works" section, instead of posting forced to "avant-garde, atonal" section. What do you think? Can that section be created? Considering this is a young composers forum, and not a dead composers one, maybe it would be interesting to offer a wider support for new music here. Mike Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 I've renamed the Experimental, Atonal, Avant-garde or Other forum Atonal, Avant-garde or Electronic. It's high time we dropped the "Other" anyway... Quote
Guest bryanholmes Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Oh, thanks fo considering my oppinion Mike. It's just I saw a confussion in keeping sections classified by instrumentation and by style at the same time. Now I'll post! Quote
Guest Anders Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 I've renamed the Experimental, Atonal, Avant-garde or Other forum Atonal, Avant-garde or Electronic. It's high time we dropped the "Other" anyway... Why not call it something like Nonstandard/Nonstandard Ensembles/Nonstandard music? This way you'll get a more general sounding definition yet still discourage that annoying, so-called ''experimental'' type of popular music. In any case, I think ''atonal'' needs to be removed from the forum name - it's a branch of the avant garde anyway, right? Not that atonality is particularly ''avant garde'' anymore.... Ahhh! This is exceedingly confusing! Oh, and you seem to have mistyped the forum description. :D It reads ''Upload atonal, avant-garde of electronic music'' Quote
nojtje Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Electronic music isn't avant-garde any more either. In fact, I'd say the label avant-garde is rather dated. I'd say that the 'nonstandard' category is more of a 'non-traditional' category. Since in the other categories, the works fit into a line of traditions. Quote
Mike Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Hmm. I suppose the problem is that some of the upload forums categorise by ensemble (Orchestral, Chamber etc.) whereas some categorise by genre (Jazz/Band/Pop/Rock, Atonal, Avant-garde and Electronic). Therein would appear to lie something of a contradiction. I'm not keen on the term "Non-standard", though. Seems almost like a cop-out, not to mention all too subjective. The label avant-garde is indeed slightly antiquated, but since it exists to describe works written next to or beyond the "boundaries" (if indeed there are any still standing), it seems to me like a convenient catch-all for pieces that are "out there" compared to the rest. That said, there are quite a few works in the other upload forums which could be described as "out there". I don't know. I'm inclined to leave things as they are - we haven't had any major problems. I think it is a good idea to remove "atonal" from the forum name, though. And I'll fix my "deliberate mistake". :) Quote
