Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Is there any way to have a member's cumulative post count NOT include posts on the Off-Topic forum? I just don't think it's helpful to those members who wish to post and receive help on music to get comments from a "Seasoned Composer" who hasn't actually posted any music or even reviewed anyone else's work. Mark Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Does it really make much difference? How many people pay attention to the the post count? I personally hadn't noticed I was over 2000 until I was at about 2200. Quote
M_is_D Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I'm over 3150, right? Lemme see... EDIT: 3189. Yay. Second only to Anders, I think. Quote
Mike Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 We've mulled over this concept before I believe, Chris. Worth re-considering though...stay tuned. Quote
Mitchell Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I'm over 3150, right? Lemme see...EDIT: 3189. Yay. Second only to Anders, I think. Because I have no life, I went and checked, and I'm 20th. = EDIT: Not like it's important. Quote

SineQuaNon Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I don't entirely follow the logic; even someone who posts a lot of comments on pieces and participates in discussions in the Composer's HQ and stuff isn't necessarily a 'Seasoned Composer' either. Obviously there is no ultimate connection between number of posts and experience as a composer, so I think the best route would be to re-name the post-count titles that reference the individual as a composer. That or people just have to realize that 'Seasoned Composer' could be way off the mark and make their own judgments on the comments they receive. Quote
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 The logic that I had in my head was that a "Seasoned Composer" here was someone who participated extensively in the forums ABOUT composition, so even if they weren't a fantastic composer, or if they didn't post much of their work, they would still have a fair amount of knowledge they'd picked up. Mike Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The user titles are composer-themed because, well, this is Young Composers. :( I do accept that it is possible they may be misinterpreted, but unlikely. I'd hope that most people judge based on the post, not features of the poster. As for Off Topic, it's true that no posts made there contribute in the musical sense (usually), but it's perfectly possible to make a community contribution through that route. My thinking is leave things be. Nothing's especially broken, so I don't especially feel the necessity to fix. :) Quote

That or people just have to realize that 'Seasoned Composer' could be way off the mark and make their own judgments on the comments they receive. I agree entirely. When I first started in this forum I realized that the post-count titles did not reflect reality. I noticed that the experience and the craftmenship of a composer had nothing to do with the number of posts posted. I just ignored it. I just realized that looking at the post-count titles was not going to tell me anything about the composer. I just dealt with it. It is not a big deal. It has never bothered me. It shouldn't bother anyone else either. If you have been using the post-count titles as a reference then you have been really mislead. Quote
robinjessome Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Does it really matter? Can't we all just change it to say whatever we want anyways? Mine says I disrupt the cosmos...now that certainly can't be true...can it? Quote
Mark Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I was wondering what everyone was talking about here, I always assumed that people wrote 'seasoned composer' or similar, but after reseting mine it appears that I'm an 'elite composer'. mmmmm. I prefer 'using the force' Quote
bob_the_sane Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Mine says I disrupt the cosmos...now that certainly can't be true...can it? Everyone disrupts the cosmos in some unimaginably tiny way... Quote
spherenine Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Everyone disrupts the cosmos in some unimaginably tiny way... Newton agrees. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I think user titles reflect ability perfectly. I'm an excellent example  Quote
robinjessome Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Hillary...um. Do you compose? Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Excellent question. Yes. Just not to the extent you people do. Quote
robinjessome Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Oh crap. You're too fast. ...I felt stupid and deleted my post. Thought I was quick enough. Quote
ISO Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I understand what Chris is saying. Pretend you are a nublet. You post a piece of a music and your first review is from x poster with 1000 post. You look at that and you can make a small assumption that this person opinion may reflect his or hers post account. After all in a lot of tech type forums people with high post counts usually are the experts, good xample (physicsforums) So to a nublet, 1000 post can be important. I personally take more stock in opinion for someone who has been around then someone who hasn't. It is the only thing a person can go on if they haven't been around. After a while things readjust and you find out who is who, but until then, what do people do? Quote
Guest Anders Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Mike, how the hell do you get the title ''seasoned composer''? Is it an age thing? I can only get mine to say ''elite composer''.. Quote
Mark Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I believe it's done on post count, I'm an 'elite composer' too, so perhaps it's over 2000, or something to that effect. And anyway, you can write whatever the hell you like there, so someone with one post could write Seasoned Composer, so this whole debate is kind of pointless. Quote
Guest Anders Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Yes, but 'seasoned composer' perplexes me because I was never at that level... I think. Quote
Mark Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 possibly because you changed it before then? Or became a mod before getting that amount of posts? Quote
