So, the prize is just a mention of the composer, on sites that have nothing to do with music (and thus the largest proportion of the population which will view the video won't be interested on the music, but the content of the video), and "free exposure"?

Artists should be treated no less than any other kind of professionals. You wouldn't ask for a builder to build you a house, and in return, you'd mention his name in the front door, and in your website which is about table industry, would you?

This is from an article posted by someone in Craig's list:

"Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit."

That article continued by giving out six guidelines for artists who are offered a job with payment such as "free exposure" and "mentions in websites". Here's a couple:

"1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid. "

Nathan,

Have you been paid to do this video? Are you getting money?

If so, it is a shame of you to come here asking for music for free! I could speak even louder (and I will once I get the fact that IT IS in fact a paid project for you)

Sorry that I missed the "...first

professional-grade video at work..." which means that it is 95% a paid project!

In fact I will chase you a bit to find out exactly and point you to the right direction as to how to treat musicians and composers. :<

Yep, honestly that's why I didn't reply immediately offering to help. I'm trying to move away from free projects and this one seems good but is worth a little more compensation than you're offering.

It wasn`t so much a 'good job' on Nikolas' part. It was a slew of hate emails I received from members of your community rather than civil discussions. I did talk to Nikolas and it was clear the film community (which I am part of) and the composer community run VERY different from each other. You can thank him for keeping me from thinking all composers are high elitest who spit on anyone who is against the codes you have amongst yourselves. He was nice enough to discuss the issue with me rather than sending me emails like "You are what destroys composers chances" and "You insult us all. Thank you."

We chatted with Nathan, over AIM, and everything was nice and civilised.

For a little further explanation. The film he did was not exactly paid, as usual. It's part of his day job, which has little to nothing to do with filming... So paid indeed, but it's not his fault that there is no budget for the composer. Sure he could try to find it, or give something of his own, but still...

I am hugely more angry at Frank on the other contest thread and his CDs...

I should point out that there have been no emails logged as sent to you by other members whatsoever.

If you did in fact mean private messages, feel free to forward them to me.

Otherwise, members are free to make up their own minds as to how this claim reflects on your character.

In the case of Nathan, as I said, I spoke with the guy through AIM. :P

Frank guy and his CDs disgusted me I have to say, but at least he did answer me, which is, again, to his honour, or whatever is left from him, asking for 5 hours of music (!) for free!
