All of them.

Have big intervals between the the lower instruments, and closer intervals between the higher ones, and just experiement.

Yes, contrary to what the general midi symphony orchestra (and a certain video game music composer whose name I will not disclose) thinks, an orchestral hit is not an ''instrument''... You have to skilfully shape the hits using all of the orchestra's instruments.

The idea of widening the voicing is definetly in the right track. Which instruments is really depends which instruments your writing for. Normally the more instruments and the better spacing and choice of intervals the "bigger" the effect.
