CaltechViolist Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I'd be interested in more chamber music competitions. (Being as slow as I am, I can't really compose for a competition... I have to find a competition that fits the piece.) Quote
piano_player18 Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 There really are not too many composition contest for chamber music, but there are some. You could find quite a few. I would suggest searching google.com with keywords: young composers chamber music composition compeitition (or contest) Good luck! There are also some link sites. Just pm me if you want those and I will send you the links. I spent hours looking for all these! Over 20 pages of search results! Does anyone have any other competitions for young composers? Quote

piano_player18 Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 That's an awesome list as well! I will definately enter some of those. I wish they didn't cost money to enter however. Quote
CaltechViolist Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hmm. Looks like I'm not entering any in 2006... :glare: Quote
piano_player18 Posted January 9, 2006 Author Posted January 9, 2006 Hmm. Looks like I'm not entering any in 2006... :P Really, all you need is a solid orchestral score for most of these. Quote
CaltechViolist Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Eh. I'm working on my third and fourth compositions, lifetime. Neither of the first two are eligible for most of the contests, one being too long and the other being a chamber miniature. Quote
piano_player18 Posted January 13, 2006 Author Posted January 13, 2006 I would get to work RIGHT NOW on a full orchestral score. You will need one to enter most of these contests. You definately should not let these great opportunities pass! There is too much to miss and it's hard enough finding stuff like this for young composers to do and get their work performed. Quote
Old Composer Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 For some reason I tend to have problems writing full orchestral scores. I've never actually completed one before. Quote
piano_player18 Posted January 17, 2006 Author Posted January 17, 2006 Problems with what? Coming up with melodic material? All the different keys? Transposing? Quote
onearmedbandit Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I'd love to enter a composition contest!! But unfortunately it seems that they all require a lot of info... a letter of recommendation from a music person familiar with my work? How could I print out A3 scores? Plus i'd have to mail it all to the USA which would take a while and cost quite a bit. On top of all that I don't think I'm good enough (yet) to submit anything for an actual performance. I wouldn't stand a chance against people who actually know about music! Aren't there composition contests for people who haven't studied music? Quote
CaltechViolist Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I wish there were... also being a completely self-taught amateur composer, I share your pain. That said, you're a lot better than you think - your Alpine Overture blew away most of the stuff here written by people that do study music full-time, and would have a pretty good chance in almost any competition you enter it in. The real difficulty, as an amateur composer, is that one often cannot afford to write for a competition, because it would require delaying more significant pieces (and possibly interfering with the primary career). Quote
robtheman5824 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I decided in about November that I was going to enter the Morton Gould Competition. It should be fun. Quote
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Juventas is a musical group in Boston that does all contemporary, and are constantly calling for new scores. Even if your piece isn't chosen in one selection period, it's held over to each one after that. Quote

Definitely! A law degree ain't no walk in the park  But we get very long summer holidays when I'll have all the time in the world to compose! Quote
piano_player18 Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 I'm going to try to finish a new score for the Morton Gould competition as well. That is put on by ASCAP...so It's a huge honor if you win. As a matter of fact, there is an upcoming competition I posted that is for grade school composers only. That is the MENC competition. You can enter anything you want with that. (It doesn't have to be an orchestral score like I think I posted.) Quote
Old Composer Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I have problems writing what I feel is worthy material. I think I get too overwhelmed by the number of instruments, as if each has to have different parts. Transposition isn't a problem. In any case, I write with NWC, so it's concert pitch until I choose otherwise :). Quote
piano_player18 Posted February 10, 2006 Author Posted February 10, 2006 I just got in the top 3 finalist for the Central Florida Young Composers Challenge. My piece is being performed this Sunday and I will be down there for the performance. Quote
Derek Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I never enter my work into competitions because I already know I'm awesome no...actually...competition in music? bleh Quote
CaltechViolist Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Congrats! (Still working on the same pieces I've been working on, well, forever...) Quote
