Great work by Mike. The old archive was hosted with WebCrossing software, so the database file could only be read by WebCrossing. The reason why the conversion from WebCrossing to Vbulletin was necessary was because of cost issues. WebCrossing limits daily views according to how much the webmaster is willing to pay. Not to mention, the software is slow. Therefore, Mike took the initiative this weekend to convert the old database to a readable form where Vbulletin can present the data in a much quicker and neater style.

There are messages on this archive date back to 2000. This site has went through some massive transitions, and will continue to do so in the future.

Before when?

I've ported all posts made on the old forum up until the point at which chopin took over the site. That's from 1998-2005. There is no other data.

EDIT: Oh, I see chopin specified 2000 in his post. That is not the case. :)

Porcaro is a retard, that's all.

That's why we have dual-Mike action :P

Awesome

I've missed reading over it. When I lost access to it, it was like being half-way through an interesting book and having to return it to the library i.e. just plain mean

And just as an FYI, I can confirm that the archive actually dates back to 1997, having properly researched the issue. This is YC's first ever post:

Unfortunately our friend sysop had a nasty habit of starting threads with a blank opening message. These made a tad more sense on the old system, which presented them simply as the thread title and the username, followed by the replies.

So anyway, it would seem that by all accounts, this Mike is a "retard" too.

I don't think the old board had signatures, as such. They were more "bylines", displayed below the username; individual posts were presented in much the same manner as with the default vBulletin skin, with a horizontal table cell containing user information above another horizontal cell containing the post.

Bylines were included in the data I had to hand, but I chose not to use them because they wouldn't be properly presented (not without some extravagant template alterations, anyway).

...I still do a double-take every time I scroll to the bottom of the page and see "Last post by Marissa Brook" :)
