chopin Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 So, if Young Composers adopted a webmail service similar to hotmail and gmail, how many of you would use it? For example, would you be interested in @youngcomposers.com email addresses? And if so, why? Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I thought we tried this. It didn't work  I'd use it within the forum so that I wouldn't give others my outside, more personal address when I didn't feel it was needed. (seems like a good reason to me...) Quote
chopin Posted July 5, 2007 Author Posted July 5, 2007 I thought we tried this. It didn't work :happy:I'd use it within the forum so that I wouldn't give others my outside, more personal address when I didn't feel it was needed. (seems like a good reason to me...) It didn't work but we are looking to make another investment if necessary to get this to work. I'd just like to get an idea of how many people would use the system. We obviously can't give out as much space as hotmail/gmail, but we can look for different ways to make YC webmail more enjoyable to use. One advantage would be real time checking of email as you browse the website, without the need to switch to gmail/hotmail/yahoo. But again, this is all concept right now. Quote
richivinsky Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I would use it if it forwarded the mail to my gmail account. It's a great idea because that way you can give it to people and they can instantly see from your email address what it is you're about, and that's composition. Quote
Mark Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I would defintely use it, and probably as my main address. Quote
Mitchell Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I voted no, because I don't use email at all. I already have multiple email addresses that I don't use. But it is a good idea. Quote
nikolas Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I wouldn't use it (thus voted no), but I can see it being somewhat useful. Take care though that someone with *@youngcomposers.com e-mailing SPAM or porn, or other offensive material could be a problem. And given that people in here are exactly that: young, you might have problem. You can't dictate what people will e-mail, nor add a signature in their e-mail "young composers are not responsible for what this person is e-mailing". They can and SHOULD take it out. The reason I don't care is that I have my professional address in my website, and another 3-4 with yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc... Quote
Mitchell Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Yeah, I have four hotmail accounts, a yahoo one, a gmail for my facebook spam and probably countless others. I don't need another. Quote
Mark Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I have loads aswell, but I only use one of the, and this would replace that one, as it looks better just having mark@... rather than some other load of crap because there are already lots of marks on yahoo/google/etc. Quote
robinjessome Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 I likely wouldn't use one, for similar reasons to Nikolas. I have one email that I use frequently and probably wouldn't bother to switch. Quote
oboeducky Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Whoever sets this up/is considering setting it up: please consider Google Apps. Not only is it free, but it is easy to set up and manage. Quote
chopin Posted July 5, 2007 Author Posted July 5, 2007 Whoever sets this up/is considering setting it up: please consider Google Apps. Not only is it free, but it is easy to set up and manage. We actually did set this up, but then I took it down because I decided that I do not want the Google brand all over our site. I'd rather have our own system built for us or licensed, or a combo of both, in which the user does not have to leave the site, and can track his/her own messages as they browse the site. Of course, all depending on whether or not there is a demand, and so far it looks like this may be the case. Quote
OmarSanchez Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 :)I say yes, because it would protect you and your current email address... Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Would there be a limited number of addresses/ would there be conditions for who could and who couldn't have one (based on stuff like quantity/quality of contributions or length of time as a member)? Quote
chopin Posted July 9, 2007 Author Posted July 9, 2007 Would there be a limited number of addresses/ would there be conditions for who could and who couldn't have one (based on stuff like quantity/quality of contributions or length of time as a member)? You would only be allowed one email address since it would be integrated with your forum account. Bandwidth permitting, there will be no limitations of email usage. Quote
Fox Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I'm not sure if I would use it. Againt heproblem would just be switching. I have an e-mail addy I use for most stuff and another for MSN...a third may be a bit much to manage. Quote
chopin Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 At first we were going to use Google email addresses, then I decided against that. Then we tried a vbulletin mod, made by other members, but to this date I still can't get that modification to work. Thus, no free solution exists at this time. I will talk to my programmer to see how much extra it would cost to implement an email system, but if the costs are too much extra, the only way we can add the email system is if we either get donations for it, or if I see that our new addition after investment is working out well. But I will keep everyone updated. Quote
James H. Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I likely wouldn't use one, for similar reasons to Nikolas. I have one email that I use frequently and probably wouldn't bother to switch. Ditto, and..... Yeah, I have four hotmail accounts, a yahoo one, a gmail for my facebook spam and probably countless others. I don't need another. Why, if I may ask? I only need and use one. Quote
Chaski Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I think it would work quite well. Many universities use this system of each student with their username is their email address. If everyone's email address was their username (e.g. chaski@youngcomposers.com) then we could easily identify the address, there would be no confusion to who's was who's, and important information from Admin/Mods could easily be sent. Thumbs up from me :) Quote
James H. Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Important information could be sent, yes, but the question is, will most members use this address at all? I don't think I would. I use one, that is all I need. I have all my incoming e-mail in one place, neat and .... sorta organised. I would think it unnecessary to use a YC address when my own suits me just fine. However, if I didn't happen to already have an established e-mail address, I would definitely use the YC one. :P Quote

Maybe having the YC email being fowarded to your normal account? Then I suppose there would be no real need for the address... I see your point, but if there's enough people for it, I'll deffinatley join in. Quote
James H. Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Maybe having the YC email being fowarded to your normal account? If that could be done, then I am all for it. :) Quote
Chaski Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Yes, I'm fairly sure that can be done. With most webmail service's, you can foward email to another address. Although with GMail, I know you can add POP3 accounts directly, which is even easier. Quote
