Writer's Block Fanfare.pdfHere's another one for y'all. I wrote this one earlier this year, while I was getting my bearings with composing again. I started with Brass Quintets and other small ensembles, just to get the hang of it, and because c'mon.. Who doesn't like a brass quintet?! As the name implies, I ran out of ideas much earlier than I wanted to. The music on the page was demanding to be what it wanted to be, so, I caved in and just slapped in a resolution to what was already there, and this was the results. Let me know what you guys think 🙂 @PeterthePapercomPoser I fixed the issue with that triplet! Turns out the last muse update fixed whatever was wrong there, because I would've expected the program to flag the score as "corrupt" whenever this was an issue, given that technically, with the eighth triplets, the measure only had 3 beats in 4/4 time... but eh. it's resolved, now! Trying something crazy - it might not work, but it's fun to try new things I have a piece that I've arranged for band/orchestra and I was thinking it'd be cool to do a virtual band type recording Here's the link to the project drive - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cYfbUEXY9swZi-ZbNb6YI8oMmblUlloM?usp=sharing I have a piano track playing the melody at the correct tempo to keep everyone on track *IF YOU'RE PLAYING ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT OTHER THAN ALTO SAX, THOSE RECORDING INSTRUCTIONS/RECORDING ORDER ARE FOR YOU - ALTO SAX PLAYERS DISREGARD* Let me know if you have any questions

This is my "Three Sententiae for Piccolo & Tuba, Op. 344", my entry for the YC's The Tortoise & The Hare' composing competition. Here is the description that I provided with the score for my submission: "In these "Three Sententiae for Piccolo and Tuba, Op. 344", I depict the hare with the piccolo and the tortoise with the tuba. The three sententiae do not strive to particularly depict events in the fable of the "Tortoise and the Hare", opting rather to leave interpretation to the imagination of the audience. However, I have sought to highlight the hare's carelessness by the piccolo's rather carefree part and the tortoise's methodicalness by the regularity of the tuba's part. Also, in the final sententia, I have sought to highlight the dramatic ending." To the above, I might add that for me the highest note played by the tuba, the first 'C' in the final bar of the third sententia, signifies the tortoise's definitive winning step, with the hare's final flourish coming after it and extending beyond the final note of the tuba thus signifying that it was not quite enough to win the race.

So... I want to compose more for orchestra and begin to build a decent corpus. Only thing... is that I'm more knowledgeable on string techniques and writing -with a growing understanding of woodwinds. Brass are my main issues... I just don't know the best ways to compose for them! I get that they can play soft... I understand that trombones and horns can provide nice padding to any texture -but, I'm scared to death to use them because I don't want to overpower the winds and strings. I can hear the brass instruments in my head (which is a good thing for orchestration) -but I still am hesitant to use them. Any tips or suggestions?

This is a tuba concerto with piano I have been working on for quite a while. Originally this was meant to span multiple movements but I decided to run the movements together and give it cyclic properties. The sustain pedal on the piano is just holding out on this midi rendering so it gets muddy and the 8va markings cause both staves to move up or down an octave for whatever reason even if I didn't write it like that. Anyways, I hope you enjoy and criticism is welcome.

This is just an evolving theme I can't seem to get right, especially towards the end where the timpani comes in. I have just been fooling around with this for a while now and I'm lost haha it's a shame because I was really happy with the rest of it, although I would really like to replace the percussion with more classical style percussion as opposed to the hip hop kick high hat and snare already written.

Instead of arranging a piece for a full band, I tried doing a slightly different style. Inspired by Adrian Quince, I had high woodwinds (oboe), low woodwinds (bassoon), saxophone, high brass (trumpet) and low brass (tuba). The ending still isn't completely final because I still am not sure what to do with it. Any feedback/suggestions? https://musescore.com/user/15379306/scores/3341871 small band piece.mid

What are some good pieces to study brass chamber music writing? I have an assignment to write a brass duo/trio (I chose a trio) due Friday and I haven't been able to find anything decent.
